Gold price in hours of manufacturing production-worker compensation, 1850–2025. The upper panel shows the full series, from 315.5 hours in 1850 to 90.4 in 2025. The lower panel expands 1920–2025 and marks five monetary-history events. Annual values and event descriptions follow below.
176 annual observations. The lower panel expands the scale from 1920 onward. Event markers provide historical context; the chart does not establish that an event caused a change in the ratio.

Read the comparison

Price ÷ hourly compensation.

Both inputs are nominal U.S. dollars for the same year. Dividing dollars per troy ounce by dollars per hour produces hours per troy ounce.

2025: $3,442.00 per troy ounce ÷ $38.07 per hour = 90.4 hours per troy ounce.

Early compensation observations are reported to the nearest cent. This rounding creates visible steps in the nineteenth-century ratio. The historical series combines sources that change over time.

The comparison describes published gold and compensation benchmarks. Coin premiums, taxes, ownership restrictions, and household spending needs are outside the calculation.
